During hot, dry weeks, adopt the young street trees of the neighbourhood and water them with water that would otherwise go down the drain.
Matériel
A neighbourhood map, buckets and watering cans, weatherproof tags, a tree diary.
Déroulement
During extremely hot, dry summer weeks, children organise a neighbourhood schedule to “adopt” and water young street trees, using leftover water from washing vegetables or from waiting for the shower to warm up.
Walk around the neighbourhood and map the young trees: those with a stake or a thin trunk need help the most.
Each group adopts a tree, gives it a name and makes a weatherproof tag for it.
At home, collect clean leftover water in a bucket for a week. How many litres would have been lost?
Draw up a watering rota for the dry weeks, and keep a diary of each tree: leaves, soil, shade.
